Chinthurst Hill

Saturday 21 August 2021

Morning Session: 10:30am – 12noon

Afternoon Session: 2:30pm – 4:00pm

Chinthurst Hill, Chinthurst Lane, Wonersh, Guildford, Surrey GU5 0QH.

Grade II listed Chinthurst Hill was designed by Lutyens in 1893-95 in the Tudor style with inset Gothic traceried windows suggesting a mediaeval manor house altered in Elizabethan times. Set into the Surrey Hills, the house jetties out at different levels over the gardens which were planted by Gertrude Jekyll. Longstanding members will know that the house was sub-divided into 3 properties many years ago and has only recently been brought back under single ownership. Sold in 2017, the new owners are undertaking a painstaking restoration of the house which will continue the fantastic work of the last owner who started the process of piecing it back into a single dwelling. The building is of Bargate stone, quarried from the hill on which it sits and, as one would expect, is filled with exquisite detailing and craftsmanship.

With the kind permission of the owners and the contractors, members of the Lutyens Trust have been invited to attend a tour of the house during its gargantuan restoration programme. This will be, we believe, an exciting and unique opportunity to see an outstanding early example of a Lutyens’s house whilst it is empty of the paraphernalia of modern life. It will also give members a chance to see a sympathetic restoration in progress and to ask questions of the craftsmen involved.

Lunch is not included in the price, but representatives of the Trust will be taking lunch at The Jolly Farmer in nearby Bramley at 12:30 should you wish to join us. Pre-booking is advisable.

Tours are limited to 10 people. Tickets are available at pre-set times using the ticket selector below. This event is open to members only. To join the Trust click here.

Dress code: Please wear sensible clothes and flat enclosed shoes as you will be entering a building site. It may be necessary to wear PPE, which will be provided. Unless you have a medical exception we also ask that you wear a face-covering or mask.
