A Walking Tour from Trafalgar Square to St Paul’s Cathedral

Saturday, 18 November, 2023, 10:30am-2:15pm

Meeting Place: the west portico of St Martin’s-in-the-Fields, Trafalgar Square, London WC2N 4JJ.

This will take in buildings and works designed by Lutyens or those associated in some way with him. It will begin at Trafalgar Square, where the famous lions at the base of Nelson’s Column were designed by Lutyens’s name-sake, Edwin Landseer. We will then progress along to Embankment, taking in memorials and a street clock, before arriving at the former offices of Country Life. We will progress through Holborn, Temple, Fleet Street and, after some free-time to have lunch (not included), we will conclude our tour at St Paul’s Cathedral, where we have been granted special access to the Lutyens-designed gold and crystal communion plate (1927), which is normally kept in storage. We will finish by paying our respects at the memorial tablet to Sir Edwin in the OBE Chapel. 16 works in total will be seen, spanning from 1903 to 1944.

This event is open to both members and guests. Price includes personal audio headsets and access to the Lutyens’s works and memorial at St Paul’s Cathedral. Lunch is not included, but we will stop close to St Paul’s, where there will be a variety of cafés etc to choose from.
