The Goddards Study Day

Wednesday 16 June 1999

Margaret Richardson led a group of 19 to Fisher’s Hill, built by Lutyens in 1901 for Lady Betty Balfour, Lutyens’s sister-in-law, and Gerald, brother of the Prime Minister. It is an unknown and we thought much under-rated house. It is divided up but the owners of the main, central part kindly allowed us in to look round. We went on to Chinthurst Hill a major very early work of Lutyens. We had lunch at Goddards and in the afternoon Dr. Jane Ridley told us about the brilliant and eccentric Gerald Balfour and brought Fisher’s Hill to life for us. The group included three SPAB scholars who were staying at Goddards as part of their scholarship year drawing and examining the building.
