No 7 St James’s Square, London: a special visit
Tuesday 16 June, 6.30pm-7.30pm
7 St James’s Square, Westminster, London SW1Y 4JU
Westgreen Construction and Formation Architects‘ recent restoration of the property from office use has returned it to a single grand residence, the purpose for which it was conceived. It now combines its unique heritage with one-of-a-kind luxury living. Interior decor by Martin Kemp Design.
Lutyens was building the Salutation at Sandwich at the same time for the same clients, the three unmarried bachelor brothers Henry, William and Gaspard Farrer. In 1930 he went on to restore their legal offices in Lincoln’s Inn Fields, Newcastle House. It is noted in the Memorial Volumes that this is probably one of the last large London houses to be built for two or three people and Butler points out that the pantry alone is larger than the average sitting room in the 1950’s.
As at the Salutation, the library dominates the floor plan, taking a huge space at the back of the house on the first floor above the dining room. The staircase hall and library are beautifully detailed however the rest of the rooms are very simple other than the fireplaces. Despite this, the plan is still a clever use of an H layout with the central part being lit by light wells on either side. The staircase uses the space in a most unusual and unsymmetrical way in contrast to the formal character of the hall itself with long windows on either side.
The coach house at the rear of the property, demolished in the 1970’s, was not designed by Lutyens but, by permission of the Farrers, he used it as his office for the New Delhi from 1913-1924 when it moved to Bolton Street. He later remodelled it for Harold Nicholson’s studio.
Meet on the front steps by 6.30pm. Please advise if you may need any assistance to navigate the building.
No refreshments are planned but we hope those attending will frequent one of the local hostelries to celebrate their findings over a bevvy.
At £20 per ticket, we consider this a wonderful opportunity kindly offered in a slim window, while the property is still on the market.
