Lutyens in Godalming

led by Gavin Chappell

Driving down Heath Lane in Godalming, is one of those places that allows you to experience the thrill of a Lutyens building as if you were the first person to see it. The glimpse of a chimneystack, the pitch of a roof, are the foreplay that pleasures your brain, preparing you for the main event. Even elevation, every material, every detail makes your heart lighter and your soul sing. Munstead Wood is pure pleasure. On the other side of town on the steep wooded slopes that rise up to Firth Hill Road, the Red House juts out of the tree tops and sets your pulse racing. The house, as ever with Lutyens, fits the landscape and is at the same time the most interesting thing in it.

Our thanks to Sir Robert and Lady Clark and Mr and Mrs Laws for allowing us to share in such pleasure.
