Lutyens in the North: Lindisfarne and Greywalls

** NEW DATE DUE TO LACK OF TAKE-UP – NOW 2025 **

Thursday 13th – Sunday 16th March 2025

The Bamburgh Castle Inn, Seahouses, Northumberland NE68 7SQ

Arriving in Northumberland on the evening of 13th March, guests will be staying at The Bamburgh Castle Inn, with the official tour starting the following day.

On Friday 14th, a coach will pick up the group at the Inn and journey across the causeway for a prompt start at Lindisfarne Castle at 10:30am. Nick Lewis will give an introductory talk focusing on Lutyens’s commission by Country Life founder Edward Hudson and the Lutyens family visits, plus behind-the-scene stories. This will be followed by a guided tour of the castle, a packed-lunch and then an opportunity (weather allowing) to walk down to the Gertrude Jekyll garden. Depending on the tide, there may be some free-time to explore the island before returning to the mainland and the Bamburgh Inn by coach. (The causeway is safe until 4:10pm and then not again until 9:50pm.)

On Saturday 15th, we will be visiting the sister fort of Bamburgh Castle, with lunch on site. After which the coach will collect us and journey across the Scottish border to Greywalls, where we will spend the night. Dinner is not included, but guests can book dinner at the Lutyens-designed hotel in advance if they wish.

On Sunday 16th, we will be treated to an exclusive tour of Greywalls by General Manager Simon, and through the gardens by Head Gardener Neil. There will be a 3-course lunch to enjoy and guests are free to explore the grounds at their leisure once the official tour is complete.

There are several nearby golf courses, for those so inclined. The house itself is situated at the very edge of Muirfield, which is regarded as one of the oldest Clubs, having been founded in 1744, and sometimes home to The British Open.
