International Planning History Society 12th International Conference in New Delhi

11 – 14 December 2006

Dr. Mervyn Miller, for 21 years the Architectural Adviser to the Lutyens Trust, will give an opening keynote address on ‘Vision of Splendour: Lutyens, Baker and New Delhi’ at the 12th International Conference of the IPHS in New Delhi in December, 2006. The conference theme is ‘Cross transfer of planning ideas and local identity’, and the fusion of the layout, with elements of the City Beautiful and the Garden City, with western classical architecture, tempered by the skillful use of Indian details, produced one of the finest new cities of the 20th century.

Dr, Miller is currently revising the history of Hampstead Garden Suburb which was originally published in 1992, and which has long been out of print. The fully revised edition of Hampstead Garden Suburb: Arts and Crafts Utopia? Is to be published by Phillimore late 2006/Spring 2007, in advance of the centenary of the Suburb in May next year. Full details will appear in the Spring 2007 edition of the Lutyens Trust Newsletter.
