Itinerary

(timings are approximate, and subject to confirmation)

Day 1

The Salutation, Knightrider St, Sandwich, Kent CT13 9EW

10:30am for 10:45am arrive at Knightrider Street for The Salutation. Parking is available outside the gate (Pay & Display). Coffees are available in the front forecourt for anyone arriving early, but are not included in the price.

10:45am-11:45am Guided tour of the Gardens with either Steve Edney – Head Gardener or Sam Scarlett – Duty Head Gardener.

11:45am-12:15pm free time to explore the ground floor public rooms.

12:15pm-1:15pm Buffet lunch in the Dining Room (also terrace if weather permitting)

1:30pm Depart for Barham Court

Barham Court, Barham, Canterbury, Kent CT4 6PD

2pm arrive at Barham Court (parking is available in the signposted field, close to the house)

2:10pm-3:30pm guided tour of the House and Gardens by Peter & Kate Cox, followed by a cup of tea in the gardens (weather permitting).

Day 2

Great Maytham Hall, Rolvenden, Kent TN17 4NE

9:30am arrival at Great Maytham (parking on the drive)

9:40am Welcome by Sir Terry Farrell

10am-11:30am Free time to explore the Exhibition (Lutyens/Jekyll/Tennant/Hodgson-Burnett), Ground Floor Public Areas and the Gardens, including The Secret Garden and Gate Lodge.

11:35am Depart for Great Dixter

11:50am arrive at Great Dixter – parking is available in the public carpark (free)

12noon-1:15pmvisit public part of House and free time to explore gardens

1:15pm-2pm Lunch in The Loggia

2pm-2:45pm explore Lutyens-wing of the House

2:50pm Depart for Wittersham House

East Kent & Sussex Tour

Tuesday 2nd-Wednesday 3rd July 2019, 10:30am-4:30pm

Starting point: The Salutation, Knightrider Street, Sandwich, Kent CT13 9EW

Join us for the 2-day tour of Lutyens in Kent & E.Sussex, with visits to The Salutation, Barham Court, Great Maytham, Great Dixter and Wittersham House. Tickets are available for either or both days.

Day One

The Salutation – guided tour of the stunning formal gardens by the Head Gardener, free time in the ground floor rooms of the house and lunch in the Dining Room.

Barham Court – by kind permission of the owners we will be able to visit this private residence and its beautiful gardens. This is a real treat, as the house is rarely open to the public.

Day Two

Great Maytham – Sir Terry Farrell will be there to welcome us to his home and to show us the capriccio of 150 of Lutyens’s works by artist Carl Laubin. The visit will include access to the ground floor rooms and a special exhibition documenting the House’s association with Lutyens, Jekyll, the Tennants (Lutyens’s clients) and the author Frances Hodgson-Burnett. Plus explore the gardens, outbuildings (exterior only).

Great Dixter – by special permission of the trustees, we will be given a guided tour of the Lutyens-wing at Dixter which is usually closed to the public. We will also see the public part of the House and have freetime to explore the beautiful gardens by Christopher Lloyd. Lunch will be served in the Garden Loggia.

Wittersham House – by kind permission of the owner we will be able to visit this private residence and its gardens. This is a real treat, as the house is rarely open to the public. Lutyens also designed Le Bois des Moutiers; Maison des Communes and Domaine du Ranguine in France for the family.

Price £95 per person per day or £180 for both days. Non-members can attend for an extra £5 per day

Parking is free and on-site, with the exception of The Salutation which has a Pay & Display car park in Knightrider Street.

Printed paper directions will be available from the tour leader at The Salutation. Please let me know if you will require a set.
